A violin concerto that will bring tears to your eyes.
Violin Concerto in D Major, Op.35
Tchaikovsky's violin concerto is perhaps the best known and most popular violin concerto. It was premiered on Dec. 4, 1881, in Vienna and is considered a masterpiece. The lyrical and emotional nature of the piece contributes to its enduring popularity.
Innovation often meets resistance.
But initially, not everyone was enthusiastic. Hungarian violinist Leopold Auer, who was asked to premiere the piece, found it "impossible to play. This caused some uncertainty but later Auer revised his opinion and recognized the potential and beauty of the work and performed it. Since then, it has evolved into one of the most beloved works in the classical repertoire.
Tchaikovsky: a romantic with a broken soul
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) was a brilliant composer; he is considered a musical genius. His compositions are characterized by emotional depth and lyrical melodies. On a personal level, he struggled with his orientation. He was homosexual, at a time when this was not at all accepted. This internal struggle is reflected in some of his works, including this violin concerto.
I invite you to take your time and listen to this wonderful concert, and I hope that like me, the beauty of it will bring tears to your eyes. Enjoy!
